My Writing

I would love to be one of those writers who chooses just one way of writing, and does it very well. But that’s not me.

Instead I find my inspiration in writing in many different styles. It’s hard to say why a particular image should become a poem, rather than a scene for a novel or indeed a piece of journalism, but I have learnt to trust my instincts.

I’ve separated my work out on this website into poetry, novels, short stories and journalism, but I wouldn’t be a writer without being a reader so here are some of my influences. Some are writing now, one is from the 11th century, but they are writers whose work remains, for me, eclectic, exciting and eternally fresh. Hopefully some of them may be discoveries for you too, and I’d love to know how you get on with them. Or indeed if you have any favourites, you would like to share with me.
